Herein, we describe our “Data Protections and Privacy Policy,” which governs prospective members, providers, and visitors (collectively, “you” or “your”) use of any online service location (i.e., website or application) that contains a link to this policy and also applies to any features including widgets, plug-ins, applications, content, downloads, and/or other services. Despite the method by which you access or use our services, whether on personal computers, mobile devices, or otherwise.
BIG is committed to protecting privacy and personal data, and we take a human approach in how we process all customers, clients, and stakeholders with openness and transparency. To our knowledge, the terms of our data protection and privacy standards described herein are in accordance with applicable international General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Jamaican Data Protection Act, and standard industry protection regulations and laws. Our approach is designed to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of personal data while aligning with industry best practices. By using our Site, you consent to our Data Protection and Privacy Policy, as described below.
This policy applies to all personal and non-personal data collected, stored, and processed by BIG, including:
Personal data is collected for specific, legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner incompatible with those purposes. We collect only the necessary data required to fulfill our services. We ensure that personal data is accurate and up-to-date. Prior to collecting personal data, BIG obtains explicit consent from customers. Consent is informed, specific, and freely given, and customers have the option to withdraw their consent at any time. Personal data is collected for purposes such as insurance underwriting, claims processing, customer support, and marketing. Sensitive data, including health and financial data is categorized as sensitive data and requires higher protection standards. Such data is only processed for the provision of relevant health subscription or claim services, and explicit consent is required. The use of aggregated non-personal data in marketing and fundraising can be done without consent.
Personal Data
Personally identifiable information shared with BIG will only be used as permitted by law. Any personally identifiable information provided to us, including your phone number and email, will not be sold, rented, or licensed unless you provide explicit consent. BIG may share personal data with third-party providers for the execution of insurance services requested. All third-party providers are subject to stringent data protection agreements and must comply with our data privacy standards. In addition, the information you provide will not be used to qualify eligibility, premiums, or claims by BIG.
In compliance with applicable laws, we may share your information if we determine in good faith that it is necessary to protect the rights, safety, or property of BIG or others, including by enforcing our policies and agreements. Additionally, we may disclose information to meet legal and regulatory requirements, such as responding to subpoenas or court orders. Where legally allowed, we reserve full discretion to decide whether or not to make such disclosures or challenge them without notifying you.
You can request access to their personal data and obtain a copy of the data we hold. You can request corrections to inaccurate or incomplete data. At any point, you have the right to request the deletion of their data, subject to legal obligations. Individuals can object to data processing for marketing or other purposes or request that the processing of their data be restricted under certain conditions. Personal data is retained for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, including legal, accounting, or reporting requirements. When data is no longer required, it is securely disposed of through data deletion or anonymization.
Non-personal data
BIG may collect non-personal data to improve user experience, enhance website performance, and analyze trends in website usage. For instance, BIG may use general geolocation data to optimize services in specific regions or to tailor content based on user preferences. We may also track device information and website usage to identify technical issues or popular features. BIG will not use this data to identify individual users, and data collection is primarily for improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
When we share data, it may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where our data hosting provider’s servers are located. While some of the laws may differ from your own country’s laws, rest assured that if we disclose personal data, safeguards are in place to ensure your personal data remains protected.
For expatriate health subscription partners in Europe, this means that your data may be transferred outside of Europe. Where your personal data is transferred outside Europe, it will only be transferred in compliance with the GDPR through approved transfer mechanisms to protect your personal data–i.e., by entering into the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. For health subscription members for whom health services are being paid for through our services, all cross-border data transfers, to include any transfer of personal data outside of Jamaica, will only occur in compliance with GDPR and Jamaica’s Data Protection Act with adequate protections in place, including Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision. For further information, please contact us using the details set out in the Contact Us section below.
Personal data is encrypted at rest and during transmission using industry-standard encryption protocols. Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel who require it for legitimate business purposes. Role-based access controls are in place. In the event of a data breach, BIG will notify affected individuals and the relevant data protection authorities within 72 hours, in compliance with GDPR and local Jamaica regulations. BIG conducts regular data protection audits to ensure compliance with this policy and continuously improve security measures.
BIG uses cookies on its websites to enhance user experience and analyze site usage. At any point, you can disable the cookies by adjusting your browser settings to block or delete them. Most browsers automatically allow cookies until you change the default settings.
By not accepting our cookies, you may not be able to use all portions of the services provided through our website.
